•어린이날의 시작은 방정환 선생을 비롯한 소파(小波) 동인지 ‘색동회’ 회원들이 1923년 5월 1일에 ‘어린이날’을 처음 제정한 데에서 출발합니다.

•방정환 선생은 한국 어린이날을 만든 중심 인물로, 어린이에 대한 사랑과 인권 존중의 사상을 처음으로 사회에 널리 알린 분입니다. 어린이도 하나의 인격체로 존중받아야 하며, 교육을 통해 밝은 미래를 만들어야 한다는 생각을 가지고 있었습니다.


2. 날짜 변경

•1927년에는 노동절과 겹친다는 이유로 5월 1일에서 5월 첫 일요일로 변경되었고,

해방 후인 1946년에는 5월 5일로 확정되어 현재까지 이어지고 있습니다.
 

3. 법적 공휴일 지정
 

어린이날은 1975년 1월 27일에 대통령령으로 법정 공휴일로 지정되어 공식적인 기념일이 되었습니다.

이후 2018년부터는 어린이날이 주말이나 다른 공휴일과 겹칠 경우, 그다음 비공휴일을 대체휴일로 지정하고 있습니다.
